Ya Lost Me
I picked this novel up in the dollar bin at Target over a year
ago. The author got a nod from Stephen King,
one of my favorite authors, so I thought it might be interesting. I actually forgot about it until a few weeks
when I rediscovered it while packing to move.
Lost Boy, Lost Girl by Peter Straub begins with the main
character, Tim Underhill, receiving word that his brother's wife has committed
suicide for no apparent reason. Tim returns to his hometown,
Milhaven, to support his brother and nephew. After the funeral, Tim
returns home to Manhattan, only to come back to Milhaven fifteen days later
when his nephew mysteriously disappears. Tim finds out that there's a
pedophilic murderer on the loose and suspects that he has to do with his nephew
disappearance. What follows is Tim's search for the truth about his
sister-in-law's suicide and his nephew's disappearance, which turn out to both
be linked to the house that sits behind his brother's home.
Lost Boy, Lost
Girl is a strange novel that I found very hard to get into. I
love horror stories and don't shy away from stories about the supernatural, but
this was just too far-fetched for my liking. I prefer stories
where strange things occur, but that are explained naturally. I
kind-of feel like the author is copping out when they use the supernatural to
explain things. The story was all over the place and was unclear a lot of
the time. I had a hard time keeping up and following the story. I guess in this case the “Lost girl” would
be me.
I really don’t have much else to say about this book. It wasn’t well written and I didn’t enjoy
Straub’s style. I pretty much just
didn’t like it. Sorry, Peter.
